LEARN TO SWIM WITH HYTHE AQUA
Junior swimming lessons are aimed at 5 to 16 year olds. Find out more below:
The lessons cover a variety of skills including water confidence and stroke development.
All teachers are Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) qualified and attend regular development updates.
The lesson programme is regularly monitored to ensure that we maintain high standards of tuition and customer service.
Like learning to read, write or even ride a bicycle, swimming is an invaluable life skill. In addition to being a great form of low impact exercise, its great for confidence and good fun too.
With a heritage of developing highly competitive swimmers, Hythe Aqua know a thing or two about teaching children how to swim!
Can anyone learn ?
Hythe Aqua Learn to Swim scheme provides a range of swimming lessons for youngsters of all abilities.
How will my child learn ?
Our teaching sessions are structured around the National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS) that is issued by the Amateur Swimming Association. As swimmers become more proficient, they progress through the various levels. At each level, the swimmer’s level of ability is assessed, and when the required standard is achieved, a certificate is awarded. Places are available for non-swimmers, beginners and improvers. There is often a waiting list for the learner pool and the starter group in the main pool.
Who will teach my child ?
Hythe Aqua Learn to Swim Scheme only use highly qualified and experienced instructors. All of our instructors have qualifications in swimming tuition from the Amateur Swimming Association and importantly enjoy working with children.
Where do I need to go ?
The Hythe Aqua Learn to Swim Scheme is based at the South Road Pool during Club Nights on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings. The lessons operate as a progressive scheme, so once you have joined the club you will progress through the various swimming lessons until you reach the competitive section
What equipment will my child need ?
The main things that your child will need when learning to swim with us is lots of energy and the ability to listen carefully!
Any sensible costume for girls and a swim hat is recommended and trunks for boys is fine, and a fairly decent pair of goggles is highly recommended. We provide other equipment such as floats to begin with. As your child progresses through the various groups and maybe on into the main club sections, you may want to consider buying a float and other items. Our swim shop stocks a range of goggles, costumes and other items..
What happens to the money ?
The money raised from teaching and other club activities is carefully managed by the club's treasurer, and used to continue the good work of the club. A big portion of the money is used to pay for pool time, and other essential expenses. Everyone working within the club is a volunteer.
My child is quite shy and / or scared - can you still help ?
Be reassured that your child is almost certainly not the only one who feels like this. We make it our job to welcome children, making sure they don't feel left out or frightened. Please feel free to discuss any concerns or worries with one of our instructors.
How do I get started ?
The first thing to remember is that we are a friendly and welcoming bunch and always welcome new people! Please book a water test either by telephone or via the email link for a Thursday evening at 6.00pm and we will carry out a free test and either find a suitable place in our programme or put your child on an appropriate waiting list.

Affiliation:
We are affiliated with the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) and have swimmers competing in ASA Open competitions. Despite being essentially a competitive club we still pride ourselves in our friendly atmosphere and open structure. All of our coaches are either ASA or Swimming Teachers' Association (STA) qualified. The club is fully compliant with the A.S.A.'s Child Protection procedures.
Main Club Nights :
Our main Club Nights are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays but we have training sessions on most days. The majority of our sessions are at Hythe Pool but we do use time at Folkestone Sports Centre.
Chris Cook; 100m breastroke Olympic finalist and Commonwealth Gold medallist coached Hythe Aqua’s squad.
As part of our swimmer’s development Chris Cook; 100m breastroke Olympic finalist and Commonwealth Gold medallist coached Hythe Aqua’s squad.
A superb turnout from our intermediates and both squads, (aged from 6 to 19), enjoyed and appreciated a master class in breastroke swimming from Chris.
As the first British swimmer to swim 100m Brs in under 1min he is well qualified.
Techniques, training hints and a bit of racing all seemed to focus Hythe Aqua’s swimmers. They even remembered to swim for 51m NOT 50 – great advice when racing.
From the pool it was off to the Hythe Pavilion for an inspirational talk by Chris on motivation, having dreams, not making excuses and remembering to enjoy what you do. He targeted this on sport and life. Nobody left without a little bit of that gold medal rubbed off on them.
